Pawtucket-Central Falls Train Station

Perhaps the most promising development in the city of Pawtucket has been the announcement in 2018 of the $42 million project to build a transit center containing a new train station and RIPTA bus hub in the Pawtucket Downtown.

This development will take place on a vacant piece of land that was formally a rail yard along Pine Street and has the potential to be a transformative project for the City. Indeed, the City is already seeing increased interest in the TOD (Conant Thread) District from developers as the City aims to increase mixed-use developments and residential density in the area. The area around the bus hub and train station is ripe for new development and investment that can allow this area of the City to grow and flourish. The bus hub is slated to open in late 2020 while the train station is slated to open in late, 2022.

The Train station will allow nearby residents in the surrounding Cities and towns quick access to travel by train. This access increases residents economic opportunities by allowing them passage to a wider job market. Providence is less than 10 minutes away by train while Boston is just 45 minutes away by train. Many new job opportunities will be opened up to residents across the region as new areas become more accessible, including  the Boston job market and industrial parks like Quonset Business Park in North Kingstown.

The creation of the TOD District around the train station has also led to a number of infrastructure improvements in the area including new bicycle lanes and sidewalk renovations, with more planned in the years to come. These projects are increasing accessibility to the train station and general accessibility in the TOD for motorists, bus riders, bicyclists, and pedestrians alike.
